bedtimeMany parents are convinced that the road to academic success is paved with bedtime stories. That is to say, they believe that reading to their children every night will help increase their chance of success in school. While it’s a tricky thing to categorically prove whether books from an early age increase your GPA, it does seem to at least help create a lifelong love of books. After all, children that are read to from an early age learn to appreciate what books can do.

They learn that books transport them to strange and adventurous places, and that’s a lesson that many take into adulthood. And while you might start by reading kids books to your children, you’ll be surprised how quickly they express a desire to move on to thicker, more complex books. You might even find yourself usurped at nighttime, as your kid starts enjoying the process of reading on their own. Whether it engenders an increased vocabulary or a general love of language, there’s no way to ensure that your child will be an intellectual success. But it does seem obvious that reading from an early age offers a serious leg up.

peter-rabbitFor many kids, books become beloved and treasured possessions. But which books have endured through the ages? Which books have transcended generations and proved popular with children from all backgrounds and time periods? One of the most enduring books of all time was written by Beatrix Potter, and it’s known as The Tale of Peter Rabbit. A charming little story written in 1902, the book delights kids not only for its sweet story but its wonderful illustrations as well.

Other childrens books that have sold well include 1942’s The Poky Little Puppy. This list of bestsellers also includes some tried and true favorites such as the rhyming chaos created by Dr. Seuss’s Green Eggs and Ham. And perhaps least shocking of all is the magically inclined series Harry Potter. All installments of the series top list of best sellers, both in hardcover and paperback. And now all that’s left to be seen is if the boy wizard will endure with future generations of readers.

Getting Kids Interested In Reading

kidsmagazinespictures-krisskornerWhen it comes to reading, kids often need a bit of encouragement to get started.  It’s hard for a child to sit down and read a book that is just page after page of text, especially in this modern age with computers, video games, and interactive television.  One of the best ways to get kids started reading is with comics, kids magazines, and children’s books.  Comics have been a prominent part of American culture for more than a century, and are a fun way to encourage kids to become interested in reading.  Kids magazines that feature animals, fun activities, or popular characters are another great way to get kids interested in reading.  Children’s books are a more classic method to encourage reading, but for some kids who are of reading age, children’s books can seem a little too ‘childish’ for a big kid.

No matter what method you choose, it’s also important to read with your child on a regular basis.  While reading to your child is good, reading with your child will allow your child to learn and to spend time together with their parent.
